ABOUT US
The Brewery of Saint Mars of the Desert is a small family brewery in the Attercliffe neighbourhood of Sheffield. It is owned and run by Dann Paquette and Martha Holley-Paquette, along with Grimbold the dog and a host of friends and employees. Our beers are non-gimmicky, inspired by the classic beer ingredients of barley, hops, yeast and water, and we brew beers that we love to drink, and hope you will too.
A few things to know:
All our beers are vegan (and therefore also lactose-free). None of them are gluten free. All our beers are brewed and packaged on site, by Dann and Martha, with all the fun, joy and (frankly) quite loud rows which such an intense work life entails! We brew everything in small batches, and none of our beers are pasteurised or filtered. These are real beers, brewed by real people, in a small garage in a run-down neighbourhood of Sheffield. We think they are little treasures and we hope that they brighten your evenings.
We recommend that you drink SMOD fresh, store it cold, and enjoy our beers for what they are: fun, handmade, delicious and local. Sometimes they might be a little outside of what you're used to: hazier, livelier, more bitter, more fruity... Hopefully that's part of the adventure!
St Mars has been awarded some accolades over its short life, including "2020 top ten new breweries in the world" by RateBeer, and "Brewery of the year 2021" by Pellicle Magazine's editor, Matt Curtis. In a previous brewery life, we worked together from 2008-2016, creating and brewing the beers for Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project in Boston, MA, USA. Dann's been brewing way longer than that but we'll let you ask him about that over a pint sometime...
